BROWARD, FL - November 2014 is National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month in Broward County. Broward County’s Homeless Initiative Partnership (HIP) is bringing attention to homelessness with a free cooperative art event designed to heighten awareness. This annual event will precede the upcoming annual Point-in-Time Count in January 2015. A collection of nearly 60 pieces of artwork, consisting of drawings, paintings miniature pottery and mixed media will be on display this month from November 7th-23rd at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, (AARLCC) 2650 Sistrunk Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. A free, special reception will be held on Monday, November 10th at 5PM.

The art collection includes work submitted by adults and children who have been or who are homeless along with work from NSU’s Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale’s “Research and Development: Concerning Belonging” exhibit. NSU’s works were created in artist-led workshops for residents of the Broward Partnership for the Homeless. The goal of the workshops was to reimagine one’s past, present or future through art. The program is made possible by a collaborative partnership between Broward County’s HIP, Libraries Division, Cultural Division, the Broward Community Foundation and Nova Southeastern Museum of Modern Art.

"The exhibit is just one of many ways that we are educating the public about ending homelessness in Broward County by 2016," said Michael Wright, Broward County Homelessness Initiative Partnership Administrator. "While the total number of people experiencing homelessness has decreased in Broward County, reaching a 7-year low in 2014, our chronically homeless population is nearly 2X higher than that of the United States."
