BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County Commissioners and the School Board of Broward County have designated September as "Library Card Sign-Up Month" and encourage everyone to apply for a free library card.

As kids head back to school, "Library Card Sign-Up Month" serves as a reminder that a library card is the most important school supply a child can have. School and public libraries offer free access to technology and innovative educational programming and play an important role in the education and development of children.  So far 102,000 library card applications have been distributed to elementary school children and nearly 20,000 have been returned for processing.

"Not every kid gets to travel, or go to museums or see things beyond their neighborhood. A library card gives them that opportunity to go wherever they want to go. We want to make sure we get a library card in the hands of every child in Broward County," said Commissioner Beam Furr who presented the proclamation to Robin Bartleman, Broward County School Board Member and Skye Patrick, Director Broward County Libraries Division.

With a Broward County Library card you have access to more than three million books, videos, CDs, DVDs, CD ROMs and audio books. A library card also allows you to search the online or traditional catalog for library materials, place holds on materials you're interested in and renew library materials.

"A Broward County Library card opens up a whole world of learning and creativity for children, teens and adults," says Patrick. "If you don't have a card yet, get one. Encourage your friends and family, too, all are welcome. It's free, it's easy and you'll have access to a wealth of books, movies, music, magazines, online resources and more."

If you're a resident of Broward County, you can APPLY ONLINE, or at any Broward County Library branch. If you're not a resident, or if you need to reregister for a library card you can do so at any Broward Library location. Broward County Library cards are issued for a three year time period.
