Broward County Library to Provide Virtual Access to AARLCC Collections

- First Library in Florida to offer remote 3-D visits -

BROWARD COUNTY, FLBeginning mid-2020, Broward County Library will be the first library in Florida to offer virtual exhibition visits via three-dimensional (3D) modeling and augmented reality technology. This grant-funded initiative, beginning with 20 important acquisitions, is designed to expand access to the Special Collections at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC).

Anyone with computer access will be able to view this specially-curated online exhibition in which a 3D model of every object will be created using special software and equipment. Viewers can further experience an augmented reality encounter with the artifacts via Merge Cubes and Headsets. Virtual viewers will also be able to register for live online tours of the 3D exhibit.

A Merge Cube is the world’s first holographic object that allows the user to hold a hologram in the palm of the hand, merging the physical and digital worlds using augmented reality technology. Merge Cubes and Headsets are available for customers to check out currently for any use as part of Broward County Library’s “Gear to Go” free technology borrowing program.

Follow Broward County Library on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to get updates on the project’s progress.

This project was funded under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Florida’s LSTA program is administered by the Department of State’s Division of Library and Information Services.
