Ashley Bryan Art Series with Children's Book Author/Illustrator Nina Crews

- Online literacy event for families and educators -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - The free annual Ashley Bryan Art Series Conference (ABASC) takes place online Saturday, September 11, 2021 (12 -3PM), presented by the Broward County African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC).

The conference hosts nationally recognized children’s book authors/illustrators of African descent to inspire and teach youth and adults about their craft. The event allows children to interact with and learn from artists who make stories come alive.

This year’s featured author/illustrator is Nina Crews, whose work explores a variety of themes. Her career began in 1995 with One Hot Summer Day, and she has illustrated titles including Seeing Into Tomorrow: Haiku by Richard Wright, The Neighborhood Mother Goose, Below and many others. Her most recent book is A Girl Like Me, written by Angela Johnson.

The 2021 ABASC schedule, free and open to all:

Saturday, September 11 - Registrations:

12PM to 1PM -- Nina Crews discusses her life, work and methods to inspire children with a love of reading and art. REGISTER TO WATCH

1PM to 3PM -- Nina Crews guides viewers in a family craft "make and take" session. Broward County Library card holders may order a free Take & Make kit with registration. Viewers outside Broward may request a supply list. Register to watch here. REGISTER TO WATCH | GET A KIT

The ABASC empowers adults to expose children to the arts, encourage creativity and improve reading skills. A new resource has been developed by AARLCC to showcase its Ashley Bryan Art Collection and the authors/illustrators who have donated work in past conferences: The Ashley Bryan Project: A Resource of Exceptional Children's Books and Book Art by Authors/Illustrators of African Descent.
