Library Offers English for Families Program

- Free language literacy classes for parents and children -

BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Broward County Library is offering free a literacy services initiative, English for Families, a program series meeting from 5:30 to 7:30PM on Tuesdays, April 2-30, 2024, at the South Regional/Broward College Library, 7300 Pines Boulevard, Pembroke Pines, FL 33024, 954-201-8825.

The series increases language fluency and promotes family bonding over books.  Through reading and sharing entertaining stories, children ages 6 to 12 are primed for success in the classroom while their parents acquire basic language skills and conversational confidence.

The program's goal is to develop the literacy skills of the whole family with the help of English teachers, laying a path to success at work and school. Each week focuses on a different learning objective and builds upon the lesson from the week before. Families should plan to attend all sessions.

Every session features a new book, and the families discuss the book's theme while focusing on vocabulary, comprehension and additional literacy skills. The classes provide parents with effective strategies for challenges their children may face at school. The curriculum further develops second language skills using flashcards and direct instruction.

As a bonus to the lessons, a light meal and/or snack will be provided along with free books and a weekly raffle.

Online registration for English for Families is required and opens February 18. For additional information, contact Gloria Sickelsmith at gsickelsmith@broward.org or 954-357-7317.
