BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. - Broward County, in partnership with Broward County Schools, BECON-TV and other local partners, is pleased to recognize student winners of the recent “Take 5 to Stay Alive. Don't Text and Drive” video public service announcement competition.
The first place winner is:

“Take 5 to Stay Alive” is a public education campaign designed to bring awareness to a growing safety concern: the risks of texting and driving. BECON-TV, in partnership with Broward County, Broward County Public Schools, Broward Regional EMS Council, Broward Health, Memorial Healthcare System, Plantation Fire Department, Sunrise Fire-Rescue Department, American Medical Response, Florida Highway Patrol, SEACOR Holdings, Inc., WeatherBug and Homestead-Miami Speedway, launched the first inaugural video contest to engage high school students in creating messages for safe driving. Broward County high school students submitted a 30- to 60-second Public Service Announcement to educate viewers on the importance of driving safely while using wireless devices and not texting and driving. There were 15 entries in this year's competition representing seven schools and 69 students.
“This contest was a great way to get our target audience engaged in this very important initiative. I was amazed with the creativity and professionalism of all the entries,” said North Lauderdale Vice Mayor Jerry Graziose, a founding sponsor of the video contest.
A committee of contest partners and sponsors evaluated the submissions and chose the entry from Kilman, which features a dramatic scenario about the dangers of sending even a short text message while driving. The students from all three schools will have their videos broadcast on tri-county BECON-TV and on Broward County's online video channel, Video Central. They will also be recognized at the School Board and Broward County Commission meetings, appear on TeenTalk, a BECON-TV 60-minute youth program of unedited real talk addressing issues impacting youth, and receive several other prizes.

The winning students will be recognized at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, during the Broward County Board of County Commissioners meeting in Room 422 of the Governmental Center, 115 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale. The winning PSAs will be available on disk for interested media.

About Take 5 to Stay Alive, Don't Text and Drive
The Take 5 initiative, now entering its third year, is a program of the Broward Regional EMS Council’s Public Education committee. The purpose of the program is to educate the community, especially teens and young adults about the dangers of texting and driving. The program’s spokesperson, Gabby Chaves is a championship race car driver on the Indy Lites circuit, a Weston resident and Western High School honors graduate.
