BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Broward Cultural Division is seeking to commission multiple professional artists or artist teams to design and implement nine or more murals in celebration of Broward County's centennial, Broward 100 - Celebrating the Art of Community. Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach artists will be selected for the project through a unique partnership among Broward Cultural Division, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Community Foundation of Broward. The murals will be located in prominent outdoor locations throughout Broward County. Artists who are awarded a commission will be required to work extensively with the local community and the community engagement will guide the artist's design. The application deadline is July 7 at 11:59 p.m.
Broward 100 will commemorate the centennial with bold, innovative art and performance projects that attract visitors and bring Broward residents together using our arts, sports and recreation venues, natural attractions and incredible diversity to creatively bridge, bond and build their communities. The yearlong celebration will be framed by four distinct cornerstones of community engagement: VisualEYES, Inside Out Broward, Calendar 100 and a Grand Finale event. The goal of Broward 100 Mural Project, a component of VisualEYES, is to create murals that are located in all sectors of the community, that are a tribute to Broward County, and for the visual arts to be recognized as essential to a strong community. The County will be solely responsible for selecting the eligible artists or artist’s teams and assigning the selected artist to a mural location.
Professional artists residing in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties for a minimum of 12 months and have proof of residence are eligible to apply. Artist teams may also apply. The selected artists will be responsible for creating and implementing a community engagement plan. Prior to designing the mural, the artist will meet with the community to creatively identify or initiate dialog around community issues. The city will be responsible for helping the artist organize the necessary community dialogues and meetings. The community engagement activities will influence the style and content of the artist’s work. Selected artists may be required to participate in technical training programs specific to this project and provided by Broward County.
ARTISTS WHO HAVE RESPONDED TO THE PREVIOUS CALL TO ARTISTS FOR THE BROWARD100 MURAL PROJECT NEED NOT RE-APPLY
Mural designs will be reflective of the community, the neighborhood, their concerns and identity. The mural will be an independent work of art and does not need to represent the image of the entire city. The artist will be responsible for obtaining prior written approval and related release to incorporate a portrait of any living person into the mural. The artwork may be applied, sprayed or painted on the wall using high quality paints.
