BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Winning videos from Broward's first annual “Take 5 to Stay Alive – Don’t Text & Drive” public service announcement video competition will be shown throughout NASCAR’s Ford Championship Weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway, November 14th-16th. The video competition was held earlier this year with support from the Broward County Commission, Broward County School Board, BECON-TV and the Darrell Gwynn Foundation. The competition was open to all Broward County high school students and received 15 entries, representing seven schools and 69 students. Winners received tickets to the Ford Championship Weekend.

“We are thrilled with the response and entries we received,” states Joel Gordon, Chair of Take 5 to Stay Alive – Don’t Text & Drive. “To be able to showcase the student’s winning entries at a national sporting event like this helps us reach a wider audience about this lifesaving effort. We highly value the continued support and partnership of the Homestead-Miami Speedway.”

PSA Video Contest Winners:
First Place: Cooper City High School / Halle Kilman
Second Place: McFatter Technical High School / Edward Bays, Mahlani Brutus, Michael Gleason, Jonathan Kimmel, Jordan Mulkey, Dylan Roth
Third Place: South Broward High School / Krystyn Pope, Ravyn Tarantino, Monica Paultre

The winning videos can be viewed at Broward.org/TakeFive. Interviews are available upon request.

“This competition is a great way to get our target audience engaged in this very important topic,” said North Lauderdale Vice Mayor Jerry Graziose who plays an integral role in the Take 5 initiative. “I was amazed with the creativity and professionalism of all the entries.”

“The Take 5 to Stay Alive – Don’t Text & Drive initiative is something that cannot be understated,” said Homestead-Miami Speedway President Matthew Becherer. “We are proud to recognize these students and their efforts to make our South Florida roadways a safer place, and excited to share their success at Ford Championship Weekend, NASCAR’s culminating championship weekend.”

The 650-acre facility is active more than 280 days per year, and features a 1.5-mile oval and 2.21-mile road course. The track generates more than $250 million annually for the region. For the 13th consecutive year, NASCAR will crown champions in all three of its premier series at Homestead-Miami Speedway during Ford Championship Weekend (November 14-16). The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season will again culminate with the Ford EcoBoost 400, which is broadcast live on TV by ESPN to 200 countries in 24 languages. It also will air on radio by MRN and its affiliates throughout the country. For the first time, the NASCAR Sprint Cup series will crown its champion based on a 10-race, 16-driver elimination series. The four remaining drivers who have advanced from the previous rounds in the Chase For The Sprint Cup will compete amongst a full 43-car field at the Ford EcoBoost 400, with the highest finisher among those four drivers earning the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship.
