BROWARD COUNTY, FL – When the Home Design and Remodeling Show returns May 24th-27th, Broward County Parks will be there, emphasizing the STEAM/Environmental Education Program and other programs throughout the County’s approximately 50 park sites. The four-day event takes place at the Greater Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center (1950 Eisenhower Blvd., Fort Lauderdale 33316; 954-765-5900).

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) and environmental education are components of the Parks Division’s mission of “Recreation. Preservation. Education.” Managers, volunteers, scientists, and educators from Parks will staff a booth in the center’s lobby. They’ll be available to answer questions on green living, summer recreational and educational opportunities, and special programs for high school students completing community service hours. Seminars will be led by expert presenters on the following topics, starting at 5PM daily:

  • Fri., May 24th – “Explore and Experience Nature in the Natural Areas Near Your Home” – presented by Parks Environmental Manager Linda Briggs
  • Sat., May 25th – “Stewarding Our Environment: Volunteers Improving Parks” – Parks STEAM, Volunteer, and Grant Coordinator Dr. John Pipoly
  • Sun., May 26th – “Design Your Yard to Host Native and Migratory Birds” – Parks Naturalist Kelli Whitney of Long Key Natural Area & Nature Center
  • Mon., May 27th – “New Biological Controls for Weeds in Broward County” – Dr. Greg Wheeler, from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Invasive Plant Research Lab

Saturday and Sunday are also Family Days – from 1 to 3PM both days, there will be a “Kids’ Creative Critter Corner,” which invites ages 5 through 13 to learn about fish, tortoises, turtles, birds, frogs, and other wildlife through experiential art exercises.

One-day tickets for the Home Design and Remodeling Show are available online now or at the door the days of the event, at $10/adult and $3/child (11 and under). Discounts are available for online purchases completed by May 23rd.
