BROWARD COUNTY, FL - Throughout March 2022, Broward County Library will host in-person and online events for all ages that celebrate Women's
History Month. Program topics include race and pay bias, health,
leadership, role models - real and sci-fi, sports and more, all free and open
to the public. This year's theme is "Break the Bias."
In addition to celebrating women
and their achievements, the events instruct and entertain. Attendees will
learn why women earn 82 cents for each dollar men make; view a panel discussion
on Black women's health care disparity; become inspired by the strong women
protagonists in sci-fi and fantasy lit; share Muslim American stories with
author S.K. Ali; get advice from a midwife; and master higher self-healing with
meditation techniques. Children will get a Happy Tales story time and potting
and planting craft in person from 3:30 to 4:15PM at West Regional Library to
honor "Tree Lady" Kate Sessions.
Libraries Director Allison Grubbs will host two events. New York Times bestselling author Kim
Scott (Just
Work: How to Root Out Bias, Prejudice, and Bullying to Build a Kick-Ass Culture
of Inclusivity and Radical Candor: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity) joins
Allison Grubbs to discuss the challenges of women in leadership, online,
from 5:30 to 6:30PM on March 16th. Scott
was a CEO coach at Dropbox,
Qualtrics, Twitter and other tech companies and held leadership roles at Apple
and Google.
Leading
her Director's Book Club, Grubbs will host a lively, in-person discussion with
readers of Grandma Gatewood's Walk: The
Inspiring Story of the Woman Who Saved the Appalachian Trail, from 2:30 to
3:30PM on March 24th at the North Regional/Broward College Library. The public is invited to discuss the true story of an
elderly novice who not only hiked the 2,000-mile Oregon Trail alone, but
at age 71 became a hiking celebrity and appeared on TV with Groucho
Marx and Art Linkletter, bringing the attention that very likely saved the
trail from extinction.
All programs are free, open to
the public, and require preregistration by visiting the library's Online
Library Event Calendar and
entering "women" in the search box (date range March 1-31). For more information about these programs, please contact
Michael Bryant, Adult Services Coordinator, at Mdbryant@broward.org or 954-357-7435.
