Broward County Library Celebrates Juneteenth
  
- Celebrating Freedom with special guests, performers and activities -
  

BROWARD COUNTY, FL Broward County Library (BCL) invites the community to commemorate Juneteenth, the oldest known celebration honoring the official end of slavery in the United States, with free Juneteenth programs at participating branches.  Enjoy  special guest speakers, performances, discussions, storytelling, crafting and the legendary Blues & Sweet Potato Pie Festival.

The 23rd Annual Blues and Sweet Potato Pie Festival, a BCL signature event held at Northwest Branch/Apollo Park, celebrates Juneteenth on Saturday, June 15th with a day of music, games, fun and food for all ages.  

The African American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC) will host a documentary film screening, a Juneteenth-inspired necklace craft; a ticketed Destination Freedom signature social event for adults over 21; and a "History of Juneteenth" presentation with Dr. Clovis Shane LeMar. 

Other noteworthy Juneteenth programs include: 

  • Juneteenth Celebrates Reverence and Rhythm, an opportunity to explore historical & spiritual connections to Juneteenth with Dr. Terriel Byrd, followed by a live saxophone performance by Gregory McKnight, at Lauderdale Lakes Branch and Hollywood Beach Bernice P. Oster Branch.
  • Positively Africa performs at Lauderhill Towne Centre Library, Main Library, Miramar Branch and Northwest Branch with music, dance and storytelling for children and families. 
  • Celebrate Juneteenth and Fathers in Music, a talk, craft and performance by the South Florida Chamber Orchestra at the Hollywood Branch
